CARO is Caroline Rothwell Gerstein — founder, strategist, operator, and the person who shows up to a factory floor in Mexico City before advising on how to sell what's being made there. The work is not theoretical. It never has been.

She didn't climb a ladder. She built something of her own, from the ground up, through every kind of market condition. The 2008 crash. The birth of ecommerce. The creator economy. Agentic commerce. Each era absorbed, applied, and passed forward.

The knowledge built in those early years traveled forward through everything that followed — TOMS, The GRAMMYs, a $3B+ acquisition, 300+ brands across every category that matters. Each one a different founder, a different set of conditions, the same fundamental question: what is this actually built on, and will it hold?

She still co-founds — Economy3, ARI Technologies — because staying inside the build keeps the thinking honest. She still mentors one or two students a year in what consulting actually is. She is not just advising on the journey. She is on one too.

Von Dutch was the kind of brand that only happens once — culture, product, and timing in perfect alignment. As VP of Marketing, Caroline helped build the global phenomenon it became. She brought in the ecommerce team from prior SF-based work and together they took the brand to its first $1M month — one of the earliest proof points in fashion that digital commerce wasn't a side channel, it was the strategy. That team went on to build Cart.com. The lesson wasn't about tactics. It was about what becomes possible when architecture precedes spend.
